I have to admit a secret about MST3K

Here we go, while I’m a huge fan of the series, I actually preferred the skits to watching whole episodes. I quite commonly would switch around when the show was still on and just try to catch the skits. There were some funny moments when they riffed on movies, but most of the time it seemed few and far between. I also love bad movies, but the movies on MST3K were so bad you couldn’t watch them even with the riffing. I’ve enjoyed Rifftrax (at least the two or three of them I’ve heard) and the idea works much better imho for newer movies.

The worst aspect of MST3K is that they seemed to have sprouted thousands of very poorly done impersonators who don’t have an inch of the wit that they did. I don’t get the popularity of someone that screams like a maniac at a movie they watched when they were a kid. It’s almost like purposely picking an easy target. Some times shits dumb just because it’s for kids. Picking out plot holes in 80′s cartoons and movies for kids doesn’t really make you special. It’s like the dumbest kid in your class picking on the retarded kid. It might be funny for a few seconds, but people have been ranting this way for years now. It amazes me.

Amazingly, these people are considered geniuses and entrepreneurs for taking an idea that ran for nearly 10 years on Cable TV and doing it for the internet. At least the people that MST3K went after deserve to be mocked. Look, if I’m taking my 6 year old daughter to a movie, I don’t care how dumb it is. As long as she’s happy at the end of the film it’s all worth it. I’m not going to sit there and pick apart the movies huge plot holes, what do I care? It’s for a 6 year old.

What amazes me, is how I mentioned that I loved the skits on MST3K. It showed that the guys had talent beyond just riffing on the movies. But these same people fall flat on their faces whenever they try doing a skit during their review. For that matter I don’t even feel comfortable calling them reviews. The only reason they keep the facade of calling them reviews is so they can claim “fair use” with the footage they put into the “reviews”. Anyone that takes their reviews seriously is probably missing out on a good movie in the long run.

That’s why the few times I’ve reviewed stuff I’ve kept myself off camera. I think too many people want to be the center of attention when they make a review instead of making the stuff they review the center of attention. I’m not watching a review (if it’s a real review) because I’m interested in the reviewer. I’m interested in that which is being reviewed. Tell me if it’s worth my money, the ups and the downs of it. Why is that so hard?

And once again I probably shouldn’t be posting after drinking half a bottle of NYQUIL and still being sick. I think I had an idea of what I was going to talk about when I started this. I wish that MST3K would release a collection of nothing but the skits with the puppets. I still swear that those skits were better then the rest of the show. I even enjoyed the end of the run when the Baddies were led by Forrester’s mom. Brain Guy and Chimp (I forgot his name) were so great. It’s just bad that their legacy has seemingly led to this BS.
