Boehner Remembers War Powers Resolution Exists
I don’t even think I can take this seriously. I nearly laughed trying to type the title. John Boehner says that in the next few days Obama will be violating the War Powers Resolution. Now most people might not know the War Powers Resolution actually exists, and it’s been a while since someone invoked it. It was created in the aftermath of the Vietnam war. Since the American President is also the Commander in Chief he can deploy troops and even act as a front line commander if he wanted. During the Vietnam War there was never an official declaration of war (although there was a resolution based on the Gulf of Tokinen incident), the troops were simply there under command of the President. Congress decided that this gave too much strength to the President in the system of checks and balances we all love and the ability of the President to take these type of actions is limited to a 90 day period.
Of course the resolution has largely been ignored. The United States hasn’t been in an official declared war since World War 2. Anyone who follows history knows that there have been quite a few wars we’ve been involved in since then, including the War On Terror. How come even after finding out that the WMD’s we were told about in Iraq didn’t exist there wasn’t outcry from congress about War Resolution Act. But Congress did enjoy threatening Bush with Non-Binding Resolutions, which he proceeded to wipe his ass with. Suddenly though, ignoring the two 10 year old wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This is nothing new from the Republicans who seem to be banking everything on people having short memories. Their debate the other night with potential candidates involved a lot of Obama bashing for doing nothing about the economy. It doesn’t take more then a few seconds of searching to discover that Obama has had just about every piece of legislation stomped by Republicans who are completely unwilling to compromise. Time and again we have seen the Democrats cave to Republicans crazy demands, which only get crazier as the Dems cave.
Someone the other day argued with me that a “godwin” losses a debate. For those who don’t know, Godwin’s Law says the longer an internet discussion goes on the more likely it is someone mentions Hitler or Nazis. Well I’m more then willing to lose this debate then, because the reference is worth it. Master of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels had the best quote “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.” Those lies are the bread and butter of the Republican cause right now.
We have been cutting Taxes since day one of the Bush Regime. What has the result been? Huge budget deficits and a deteriorating economy. The predicted Budget Surplus for the decade were quickly spent in welfare handouts to rich corporations. Even more amazing is that the only way to get rid of the budget deficit while keeping the spending programs the Republicans want is to shut down the rest of the government. Everything but those programs would have to be shut down. Hey, guess what Congress, your getting an extended break!
I just can’t take the lies, the unwillingness of anyone in the press to have a backbone and the way people just flip flop. Just last November they “Sent a Message” to Democrats by putting in Republicans who would make it harder to fix the economy. It’s only June and there’s already rumblings that the Republicans might be in for a tough ride in November following the Dem Victory in NY’s 26th District. The long time Republican stronghold voted in a Democrat who played on fears of Congressman’s Ryans Medicare plans. So it took all of a half year for people to start turning against the Republicans.
Maybe everything is just moving too quick today. The “big news” of the moment changes by almost the hour it seems. People are barraged unrelentingly if they watch TV. Given the declining rate of Newspaper circulations and that reading is more memorable then watching, it’s no surprise that peoples ability to retain info is getting shorter.
Edit: And of course 2 weeks ago Boehner said Obama was in compliance with War Powers.
