Making Sense of Stats
I tend to love Stats, especially Football and Hockey. Baseball, not so much. Give me batting average and the stats that were on the back of cards, not the rest of this new age baseball BS.
But here’s something interesting I noticed while talking about the Islanders recent run of games. They’ve managed to run up a lot of penalties each game. The argument is that home teams get a bigger break on questionable calls. Thanks to NHL.Com I was able to look up the amount of times every team has been shorthanded divided by away and home.
The Islanders are currently the most shorthanded team while away from home. At 68 shorthands they have 7 more then the next closest, Colorado.
Meanwhile at home they are the least shorthanded in the league with 28.
Now you might be thinking that makes sense. You know, the home team is always going to get certain advantages. But this is where its not going to make one lick of sense. The Senators currently lead the league in most times shorthanded at home at 63. But away from home the Senators are the tied for the least amount of away shorthands at 29 with the Devils.
So how can this even be? Do the Refs in Ottawa hate the Senators? Does Ottawa suddenly decide that slashing the hell out of whoever they are against is a good idea? If anyone can make any sense of this, preferably pointing to NHL Refs being insane, please comment or email me. I’d love to hear the Explanation.
