McGwire’s a Fake

As I mentioned before, my final year of little league was right around the same time of the strike. It really soured me on baseball and I’ve almost never watched a full game since then. I caught most of Cal Ripken’s streak breaking game and some of the Mets in the world series but that’s about it. Now as a sports its just far far too slow. I remember Seattle tried an experiment, they would rebroadcast games and cut out all the bullshit between pitches. Supposedly it was popular but I’ve never heard anything about it since then.

A lot of people point towards the whole McGwire/Sosa race getting them back into baseball. At the time I thought it was hilarious. It was bad taste to point out that these two looked like they had been inflated like balloons. It amazes me what is considered bad taste while it is happening but is fine after.  You also can’t mention that priests have touched little boys, but don’t let me get into that rant.

So McGwire admitted to using steroids. Of course he had a PR firm make sure that everything was perfect, hell he probably paid someone to help him cry. The reality of the situation is that anything he says can be used against him in court. So he’s only admitting what his lawyers have said won’t get him in trouble. He wouldn’t have any of those records, he wouldn’t have hit that many home runs if not for the steroids. I don’t care what he claimed, the steroids directly lead to his home runs.

What really annoys me is that McGwire is being considered at all for the Hall of Fame. Its a mockery to anyone that’s already in the Hall. Not only that, but by far the more deserving person to be in the hall already is Pete Rose. Yes, he gambled on the game, so what? There’s more proof that the NBA has rigged playoff and regular games with their refs then Pete Rose. Even if Pete Rose did gamble on the Reds (which is possible) every report indicates that he never bet against them.

Even more so, Pete Rose has not caused a single person to die from gambling. But how many kids died or have their bodies wrecked for life by taking steroids because of seeing the freakishly large McGwire on TV. The average person with just a little bit of common sense would figure it out. But because for some reason we’re this Puritan (really?) society the gambling is considered far worse then taking steroids, cheating on a game, causing lifelong damage to people and causing deaths.

Go ahead, celebrate McGwire, put him into the Hall of Fame. Make a mockery of everything the Hall might stand for. To me McGwire is far worse then Pete Rose could ever be. McGwire though did everything a PR company would want him to, he admitted steroid usage (sort of), he cried on camera so he could seem more human and he pretended the steroids didn’t improve his performance. There’s nothing I hate more then someone being a horrible human being, but getting away with it because of good PR. Keep McGwire out of the Hall and put Rose in.
