It’s amazing how all of the sudden there’s all these people on the internet who “Loved The 90′s”. Then when you talk to them you find out they are barely old enough to even be alive in the 90′s, let alone remember what TV was like back then. I’m an old bastard, so I remember what TV was like back then. For all the good shows that were on TV, there were 3 awful ones. For every “All That” (and let’s be serious, the show had a handful of funny skits) there was garbage like Roundhouse. Even TGIF had some awful shows like “You Wish” and “Aliens In The Family”.

Most of these kids just hear about the good shows, look them up on youtube and figure the 90s were this incredible magic time. Hell for the most part the Simpsons started a run on horrible copycat primteime cartoons. UPN was the worst abuser of this, as it seemed like every season they’d have 3 new prime time cartoons that were horrible. Don’t get me started on Cartoon Network, as soon as they started premiering their own cartoons everything went downhill. Sure there’s some classics, but for the most part they were horrible. Still can’t believe how popular Powerpuff Girls became of all shows.

There seems to be this jump to claim that the 90s were great, because everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon and be able to claim they were first. Well it’s too god dam late for that already. It seems like as soon as the calendar flipped from 09 to 10 people have been bragging about how great the 90s were. There are more shows today and probably better quality because there are so many more channels today. I had every cable channel growing up, and can not explain how many times I would find nothing good on after 5-10 minutes of flipping the channel.

The other people doing the hardest pushing for “The 90s were great” are those who haven’t grown up. They are the ones who can’t believe Toonami was cancelled. These are the same man children who are currently downloading all their anime and complaining about 1Kids. Of course none of them would even be into Anime if not for 1Kids, but hey we’re already talking about assholes anyway.

The 90s weren’t great. Because there was a great expansion of cable channels, there was a willingness of channels to take chances. Ren & Stimpy for example was rejected by every major network before it found a home on Nickelodeon. The need to fill hours also helped, as some of the better shows from Canada were imported (for example, Pete & Pete and You Can’t Do That On Television). It was the cream of the crop that was brought in, as I’m sure Canadian Youths remember some awful programming too.

Just because you can pick and choose the best of 90s doesn’t mean it was a great decade. Some people would be better off dropping some of the pretentious bullshit. It’ll never happen, and the networks will play up the 90s for as long as it gets them ratings. The second the ratings drop, no one will give a shit about the 90s again. Hell once we leave the 10′s, I’m sure people will start “fondly remembering the 00′s” so I’m going to jump on that bandwagon right now. Hilliary Duff and Raven made the 00′s an awesome decade, someone needs to bring those shows back!
