TO to the Jets?

By , February 26, 2010 11:18 pm

Last year a lot of people laughed when Buffalo signed Terrell Owens. I thought it was a good move, it was a one year contract, gave them a star and it was obviously the last chance for their coach to make the Playoffs. Trent Edwards ended up just not being good enough, and Owens along with his normal drops was keyed on.

Now a free agent, with an uncapped year, the Jets should take a long hard look at TO. TO for that matter should look at the Jets. The Jets, a Half away from making the Super Bowl, would be a perfect landing place for an older Owens looking to win the big game once and for all. Paired up with Edwards on the other side, it gives two great targets for Sanchez anywhere on the field. Those are two WRs that will give any team fits, no matter their drops or age.

Now some people will say that the Jets will never take a chance like this. That Owens history is too much trouble. Personally I think Rex Ryan is a strong enough coach/personality to get him under control. Like with Owens first season in Philly, I can see it being another love/hate relationship which everyone feeds off of. There’s also no reason to give TO more then a year. With the possible lockout there’s no reason to not do everything possible to win Now.

I do hope the Jets bring back Edwards. But the pairing of Edwards and TO will give the Jets a duo they haven’t had since early this decade. Back in the days when Wayne Chrebet could always get a 1st down on 3rd downs and Cole was a threat anywhere on the field. We’re talking about almost a decade ago. It’s always been tough for the Jets to get a great receiver. The last thing they should do now is pass up on signing an elite aging WR who can still make a difference on the field.

Speaking of FA’s, what the hell are the Jets doing with the Kicker position? Feely played his heart out last season and worked double time in the playoffs. They then bring in Nick Folk who was just awful last season for the Cowboys and whose kickoffs were so bad they signed a kickoff specialist.  The Jets should have learned this playoffs how important a good clutch kicker is. Feely proved he was Clutch (and that he should have been AFC’s Pro Bowl Kicker) in the playoffs. Just give him the money he wants.

Finally, if you can bring in Pennington as a backup and mentor to Sanchez do it. Don’t kid yourself that Clemens is going to somehow go anywhere and suddenly remember how to pass the football. The kid is a bust bust bust and its time to cut the string. If not Pennington, please bring in someone who has experience so if Sanchez goes down for any extended amount of time (it has happened) the season isn’t lost.

I know from experience that the Jets are going to screw this offseason up, one way or another. We were so close yet so far last year.

Three Years in a Row?

By , February 1, 2010 4:06 pm

(Just a note, I wrote this for another blog before the Jets loss to the Colts. I still think without the injuries we would have won.)

For the last two years, an underdog team not expected to get out of the wildcard round has gotten to the Super Bowl. Two years ago it was the Giants. Last year it was the Cardinals. Can the Jets be the third straight wildcard team to beat all the odds and make it to the Super Bowl?

Most of us remember two years ago. Who can forget the Patriots 16-0 season? They steamrolled just about everyone in their way to one of the greatest regular seasons of all time. The Giants were an up and down team, Eli Manning was getting booed. Their retired star running back, Tiki Barber, claimed that the team lacked leadership. Tom Coughlin was under fire to get anything done, and just to make sure he knew he was on the chopping block the team replaced his OC and DC with their picks. Going into the playoffs after a close loss (two late Eli interceptions sealed the game) to the Patriots, the Giants were underdogs against the NFC South Winning Buccaneers. Yet they came out and after a week first half stomped them into the ground. Then against the heavily favored Cowboys, the defense stepped up and intercepted Romo on the last drive of the game in the endzone to seal a victory. Finally playing in Lambeau  in what was the third coldest game in NFL history, another interception in OT lead to the longest visitors field goal in Lambeau History at 47 yards. Finally, a rematch with the Patriots. Extreme underdogs, Patriots QB Brady laughed when Burress predicted they would only score 17 points. In the end its considered one of the biggest Super Bowl upsets of all time as the Giants won.

Last year, the Cardinals found themselves ridiculed. Losing three straight after clinching their division, they were considerable underdogs to the Atlanta Falcons in the opening round. Yet the Arizona offense came alive, and the defense played on a level they hadn’t reached all season. In upset after upset long suffering Arizona took out the heavily favored  Falcons, Panthers and Eagles to make their way to the Super Bowl. The victory over the Eagles in Philadelphia was even more stunning since the Eagles had stomped the Cardinals and put 52 points on the board earlier in the season. The defense though managed to force twelve turnovers in three playoff games and were a bit of the unsung heroes in the run. Although underdogs once again to the Steelers, some questionable officiating in the Super Bowl ended up doing the Cardinals in, but the game was far closer then anyone had predicted.

This year the Jets went into the playoffs questionably. Their rookie coach Rex Ryan had already proclaimed them out of the playoffs. If not for the Colts surrendering a perfect season, and the Bengals possibly not giving everything they had in the final mostly meaningless game for them, the Jets would have been on the outside looking in when it came to the playoffs. Yet some crazy math and some extreme luck found the Jets at 9-7 and inside the nice warm comfy playoff bubble. All the overpaid talking heads gathered around and proclaimed that the Jets didn’t deserve it. That they didn’t earn the playoff spot, and that the Bengals playing their full game would take care of the upstarts. Yet it was the Jets who came out firing on all cylinders and made the Bengals look like pretenders. Again underdogs against the “Too Many Weapons” Chargers, everyone predicted a beat down for the Jets and their Rookie QB and Coach. It seemed almost destined to happen as every home team won their game leading up to the Jets at Chargers.  Yet the Jets came out and played a masterpiece of a game defensively, and the ground and pound of the Jets finally put it away. So now, once again for a third year in a row you have an underdog facing a huge favorite at home. Someone that shouldn’t be there against someone that’s always there.

So what does the future hold? To see the future, one must only look into the past. A Colts team with an in his prime Marvin Harrison, Edgerrin James, a younger Reggie Wayne and Peyton Manning facing off against the Chad Pennington (His first Playoff appearance) led Jets. It was supposed to be a walk in the park for Manning and the Colts. Manning finished the season with 4,200 yards passing, 27 passing TDs. Harrison was coming off a career best year in Catches and Yards. Although not one of his better years, James was still one of the best and brightest young RBs and a threat all over the field. In his second season, Wayne was making his way up the Depth chart and had doubled his rookie output. With all this on the field the Jets couldn’t stand a chance against the Colts. At the end of the day the score was 41-0, as Chad Pennington in his first playoff appearance led the Jets to one of their finest victories since the 99 Playoffs.

And now, with the best running game in the league, the best defense in the league, one of the hottest up and coming rookie RBs in Shohn Greene, we face the Colts. Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne are older and wiser. But Revis has already shut down everyone that’s come his way. Addai is no Edge in his prime. History seems primed to repeat itself one more time. There’s just one more hurdle that needs to be jumped, one more upset that everyone in Jet Nation is just licking their lips over. Forty One years is a long time. That’s thirteen more years then I’ve been alive. Since I’ve been born this is only the third AFC Championship game the Jets have gotten to. One a decade it seems. Unlike the Eagles, Cowboys, Colts or Steelers this isn’t something that’s automatic next season or even the year after. Now’s the time, just one more upset to go.

Save The Jets

So the Jets are just about done. Unless they somehow beat the Dolphins and the Patriots lose the Jets are out of the playoffs. Not only that, but more then likely the QB that they kicked to the curb like trash is the one that will put the final nail in the coffin. That experiment in Green Bay? Well Rodgers has a much higher QB rating then Farve and a hell of a lot less Interceptions. If anything their Defense has been horrible, which has been bringing the Pack down. So very soon we get another great Offseason of Is he coming back or not. I was sick and tired two years ago about Farve staying or going. There is one way to save the Jets now, as Clemens is not the answer. The answer is going to be coming out of jail soon. Thats right, Ron Mexico, AKA Micheal Vick.

I think it is the biggest joke in NFL history that Micheal Vick is behind bars. Lets remember people, there have been NFL players involved in Murder who haven’t spent a day in jail. Also, they claimed that Micheal Vick would be the coverboy for Dog Fighting rings. Yet there isn’t any other stories coming out about major busts in dogfighting. Micheal Vick was nothing more then a poster boy for PETA so they could raise a bunch of new funds. For Micheal Vick to still be in jail is a joke. For him to ever be in jail is a joke. Its horrible that some people care more about animals then they do about human beings.

So hopefully Farve retires and the Jets can go with the Ultimate Wildcat formation. In the shotgun you have Clemens on one side, Vick on the other. So first off you don’t know if you can flat out QB Spy with one of your linebackers. Then if you check off you can always pitch it to Vick and he can flat out run with it or give it a hurl. Hopefully just the motion of the pitch causes some of the DBs to back off or come in. Plus you can snap it to eithger QB and still have a multitude of options. Plus its the best way to slowly get Vick back into the game without him just being a backup and holding a clipboard.

Also, I wanted to say the biggest joke I’ve heard about Vick is that he’s not going to be in shape for the season. Has anyone ever seen a person come out of jail WORSE then when he entered it? Vick is going to be a beast when he gets out of jail. Its not like he’s sitting around and eating doughnuts. He’s more then likely pumping steel and eating almost nothing. Or even worse, those sandwhiches with questionable lunch loaf on them. He is in prison in the south.

The rumors of Cassel to the Jets are some of the worst I’ve ever heard. The Patroits and a lot of other teams have learned about allowing a QB to go to another team in the same divison (cough Pennington cough) and having it bite you in the ass. Secondly lets be serious, Cassel is in a system that would allow Browning Nagle to look like a great QB. Theres got to be a reason he was a backup at USC. You don’t let someone who could be better then Palmer or Lineart play while the superstar is on the bench. Once out of the Patroits system Cassel will come back to earth. Much like AJ Feely, Rob Johnson, or any other number of QBs who were impressive for good teams and then bombed for bad teams. Lets remember Scott Mitchell looked impressive while backing up Dan Marino.

In the end the Jets will keep Mangini around for one more year. They’ll convince Farve to come back for one more year. Then Farve will ruin his legacy with a horrible season, Mangini will be fired, and the Jets will never be willing to take a chance with a Micheal Vick. Which is too bad. Its why the Jets haven’t been to the Super Bowl in forever. They will never take a chance on a guy with an Attitude. Theres a reason Keyshawn Johnson has a Super Bowl Ring and Wayne Chrebet doesn’t. For all the heart, and all the good you can say about Chrebet, it takes a certain level of talent and even being obnoxious to be a super bowl winner. Thats the best that can be said about Nammath, and yet 30 or more years later the Jets refuse to get a player with some swagger, with some attitude and with enough talent to get them far enough. Theres a reason Vinny Testervarde doesn’t have a super bowl ring. Cause he’s no God Dam Nammath!
