Blistered Thumbs: Our Staffing is Questionable

By , March 1, 2012 4:24 am

This is Blistered Thumbs staff: http://www.blisteredthumbs.net/our-staff/

Angry Joe is in charge, then you have

UK Content Editor: This is also the first staff position directly below Joes. Do they really need a single person to be the editor of UK Content? What is UK Content? Are they aiming certain topics just to the UK market?

PC Reviews Editor: Well at least this position makes sense

Lead Site Editor: No idea why this would be 3rd on the list, or how they are ordering the list anyway.  But given the number of editors they have (just wait) what’s the point of having someone overseeing the editors who are already editing? If you have a PC game that was only released in the UK for some reason, does it go through the UK editor, PC Reviews Editor and then the Lead Site editor?

Video Producer/Foreign Correspondent: I guess they didn’t need a French Content editor. Ironically, Benzaie might not actually be a “Foreign Correspondent” as the definition of such is someone that sends back news reports from a foreign country. He’s about as foreign to France as the Eiffel Tower.

MMO Review Editor: There’s 2 of these. I realize there’s a lot of MMOs, but are they so popular that one editor couldn’t handle the workload? If you cover an MMO do both people have to approve it?

Xbox/PS3 Review Editor: Why do you need 2 MMO editors, but one editor to cover both the PS3 and Xbox (I’ll guess they mean the 360 here).

Lead Retro Editor: Once again, I must be missing something. Old games, that have been reviewed into the ground get a single editor. But XBox and PS3 get shared.

Lead PSP Reviews Editor: Does anyone care about the PSP? Let’s move on.

News Contributor/Reviews/Editor: Another Editor and then there’s 2 other people that are just News Contributors/Reviews. Some of the few people that aren’t editors. Boo them.

Lead DLC Editor: Seriously? I thought the PSP editor was a joke. But a DLC editor? Here’s every DLC review ever “YOUR BEING RIPPED OFF! YOU EEEEEEEEEEEEDIOT!”

Reviews Editor: Token Chick

News & Culture Contributor, Editor: The culture of video games… This would be the most ridiculous of all of these if it wasn’t for the next position.

Top Lists Specialist/Contributor: Really, your good at “Top Lists”? Go Kill Yourself. I mean somehow this “position” is worse then the 2nd MMO Editor, “Culture Contributor” and DLC Editor. I really am out of words.

I just want to mention that they have a PSP editor. The PSP sold 71 Million units worldwide. The Nintendo DS Sold 151 Million units worldwide. They also don’t have a Wii Editor, despite the Wii outselling the Xbox 360 and PS3 COMBINED. That’s right, the PS3 sold 62 Million and the Xbox 360 sold 65 Million while the Wii sold over 150 Million. But thank god Blistered Thumbs has TWO MMO editors. Stupid is as Stupid does, especially with Angry Joe running things.

Is the Lindros To Flyers Trade Overrated?

By , May 21, 2011 9:49 pm

I consider myself a connoisseur of bad NHL trades. Especially with the time I have spent breaking down Milbury trades. Now in my opinion, nothing was worse then the Olli Jokinen/Roberto Luongo for Mark Parrish/Oleg Kvasha. Jokinen and Luongo both became All-Stars, while Parrish and Kvasha did almost nothing. But the standing notion is that the worst NHL trade in history is the Lindros trade to the Flyers for Forsberg  and a handful of prospects/picks. The common stance is that while the Avs became an elite team and won Multiple Cups, the Flyers only made the Stanley Cup Finals once and were swept by the Red Wings.

I think this is horribly slanting things against the Flyers. Lindros made them an elite team and had some great seasons. Unfortunately the failing of the Flyers was the always changing situation in Net. While the Sabres had Dominik Hasek, the Rangers had Richter, The Pens had Barasso, the Caps had Kolzig, the Panthers had Beezer, the Devils had Brodeur, the Leafs had Potvin and Joseph, and so on. While the east seemed to be overflowing with elite goalies, the Flyers were alone in not having a really great goalie. Now while Hextall was good, his time had passed. At the same time Snow, Boucher and the other Flyers goalies were good but not that good. It’s not surprising that in a period of time in which the league seemed to rely on clutch and grab and top goaltending, that the Flyers struggled.

But the Flyers still managed to make a good run of things. Meanwhile the Avs managed to fleece Patrick Roy, widely considered the best goalie in the league, who became the cornerstone of their runs to the Cup. One can only imagine what might have happened if Roy was playing for the Flyers instead of Snow for the season they made it to the Finals.

How do the two teams line up? It’s time for a breakdown of their standings from 92-93 to 99-00

92-93
Nordiques 47-27-10 104 .619 Lost in Round 1
Flyers 36-37-11 83 .494 out of playoffs

93-94
Nordiques 34-42-8 76 .452 Out of Playoffs
Flyers 35-39-10 80 .476 Out Of Playoffs

95
Nordiques 30-13-5 65 .677 Lost in Round 1
Flyers 28-16-4 60 .625 Lost in Round 3

95-96
Nordiques 47-25-10 104 .634 Won Cup
Flyers 45-24-13 107 .628 Lost in Round 2

96-97
Avalanche 49-24-9 107 .652 Lost in Round 3
Flyers 45-24-13 103 .628 Lost in Finals

97-98
Avalanche 39-26-17 95 .579 Lost in Round 1
Flyers 42-29-11 95 .579 Lost in Round 1

98-99
Avalanche 44-28-10 98 .598 Lost in Round 3
Flyers 37-26-19 94 .567 Lost in Round 1

99-00
Avalanche 42-28-11-1 96 .585 Lost in Round 3
Flyers 45-22-12-3 105 .640 Lost in Round 3

For much of Lindros’ time with the Flyers they were pretty much on an even footing with the Avs. But the goaltending struggles is obviously the difference here. For an Example, here’s Patrick Roy’s save percentages in the playoffs for the Avs: .921 .932 .906 .920 .928

In Comparison here’s Hextall’s playoff save percentages:
.904 .915 .892
Boucher’s:
.917
Snow’s
.892
Beezer:
.938

Look, if you put Roy on the Flyers, they are probably just as dominate as the Avs were. The thought that the Lindros to the Flyers trade is “One of the worst” in NHL History is overblown. Both teams joined the elite of their conference not too long after the trade. The rise of the Nordiques was long in coming as they were bad for years before. It ignores all their drafts (including the addition of Joe Sakic) and movements of their own to get better.  The Lindros deal in the end was basically Forseberg for Lindros. There were a lot of spare pieces, and the draft picks became Fiset and Baumgartner.

For a trade to be truly bad, it should dam near destroy one team and make another a powerhouse. Head to Head the Flyers matched the Avs/Nords almost every season. The difference was Roy in net. Had the Flyers ever had an answer to the struggles in net they probably would have won at least 1 Cup. There’s nothing in this trade that says if the Flyers don’t trade for Lindros they win the Cup instead. If anything they might have finished even worse then they did.

Blah Blah Blah

By , April 20, 2011 9:36 pm

From The NY Daily News On The Mets loss:

Blah blah blah blah rain blah blah blah Niese blah blah Astros blah blah Mets got spanked. Blah blah, 6-1. We really don’t know what else to tell you about this one. But we will try:

It sort of begs the question, why would any fan grab a copy of the Daily News to find news stories of any local team. That feeling goes towards the Post and the Times too. Obviously it’s sort of a running gag how bad the Mets are, but who would rather follow a free blog online that updates multiple times a day over an out of date story or at most two? I think Newspapers with as much as they struggle to turn a profit recently, cutting the sports section out might be a good move.
Even more so, it seems like beat writers for teams are either new to the job or are just trying to make a name for themselves. In the long run it’s a nice job, but if they can attract a lot of attention then they can move on to an ESPN or to their personal blog. It seems like no one just wants to be a beat writer anymore, they want to be a personality. Truthfully it’s a bit sad that this day and age that sports writing seems to be going downhill. It especially seems to be going downhill if you’ve ever googled something sports related and went to a Bleacher Report story. There’s some good guys over there, but they seem to be few and far apart.
I’m not even saying I’m any good. But it’s just tiring that everyone is trying to be a personality. Is it really that hard to report on something without trying to be a character? It comes off as trying too hard to be funny. Haha, let’s start this off with Blah Blah Blah two weeks into the season. It’s like the kid in class yelling and shouting look at me to the teacher, with no idea what the right answer is. Even when the Islanders were in the midst of a 20 game winless streak, I don’t think anyone started off a story about their previous game blah blah blah.
Maybe it’s just me, maybe I’m wrong. I haven’t followed baseball in a long time. It’s possible that this isn’t somewhat ridiculous. I just always held the NY Daily News in high regard, when I used to read both the News and the Post it was amazing the angles that the Post would take on stories. One of my favorites was the time leading up to the release of Fahrenheit 9/11 in which the Post proclaimed Moore to be Goebbels nearly every day. I don’t know if the Post ever did apologize to Moore, considering how badly they were slandering him. Especially since it has come out long ago that Bush lied about the WMDs. But hey, it’s Rupert Murdoch’s empire anyway.

I Do Not Want Your Universal LogIn

By , April 20, 2011 8:16 am

I swear, the dumbest idea on the internet lately is universal log-ins. Being able to sign into 50 different sites once you signed into one site is NOT a good idea. It’s even worse when stuff like YouTube FORCES you to get a google account. I tried to sign into one of my multiple accounts only to get stopped and informed that I had to either connect the account to my google account or create a new google account. The whole reason that I had multiple email addresses is so my main google account wouldn’t get spammed.

But let’s not dwell on the idea of forcing you to log into services. One of the main reasons that a universal login is bad is that your not protected once someone hacks your account. For example I use multiple yahoo and google email accounts for differing things depending on the level of security I need. My email that gets a ton of spam is not going to be the same email I use to access paypal. Back in the day this was recommended, especially since if you were silly enough to link everything to one email account, someone could reset all your passwords. IE: There is no protection using multiple emails if they are all tied into the same account via password reset.

Making life easier for people is only setting them up for a bigger fall when their accounts get hacked. Now thankfully yahoo has finally taken some steps forward in actually protecting your passwords, but it seems like they’ve taken a giant leap backwards in allowing you to use yahoo accounts to log in to multiple sites. It’s not just them of course. It’s rather insane seeing the number of sites that you can log into using your facebook or something else. It’s sort of disconcerting when you visit a site every once in a  blue moon and you see your facebook info on their toolbar.

Idiots are just asking to have their whole online existence wiped with a single button stroke. At some point  there is going to be a huge mistake that compromises a whole bunch of accounts across multiple platforms and then maybe we can stop this stupidity. In the long run while having one sign in for multiple places makes life easy, it also makes you just that much more susceptible to being hacked.

It sort of amazes me that people don’t realize what they are doing. I mean people are shocked when you find their stuff on other websites because they use the same nickname everywhere. They are almost acting as though google somehow doesn’t exist. To make matters worse, even if you can’t access someones account on another site once your in their email, it is possible they used the same password for everything. All you need is one site that they are signed up to to email you their password without changing it and you can most likely access everything else.

It seems like people are just never going to learn until they get burnt.
