Tonight while I was going through some random NFL stats I noticed that Micheal Vick is currently the highest rated passer in the NFL at 112 (or so) QB Rating. At the same time not too much further down the list is Kevin Kolb at 98.3 QB Rating. I got curious as to when the last time two QBs on the same team finished the season with a 100 or higher QB rating while making 40 throwing attempts or more. It’s a really short list.
In 2003 Billy Volek started one game and played in 7 others finishing 44 of 69 with 4 TDs to 1 INT. McNair was the primary starter finishing the year with a 100.1 QB Rating while posting 24 TDs to 7 INTs.
In 1987 and 1989 Steve Young and Joe Montana both finished over 100 QB Rating. But still the primary starter was Montana, as Young finished with 90 Attempts in 89 and 69 Attempts in 87. He started 3 games in 89 and 1 game in 87.
Now Young and Montana are both in the Hall of Fame, so I’m not going to say the Kolb/Vick duo is any better then them. But as of right now Kolb and Vick have split the season almost exactly between them. They both have played 4 games, they are within 9 attempts of each other (Kolb leads at 105) within 1 TD of each other (Vick has 6) and within 5 yards of one another (Kolb has 804).
These are stats that are head and shoulders above what any of the other three QB duos have managed with their backups. It’s easy to finish with a good QB rating behind a good team and only playing one or two games during the season. Vick and Kolb are doing something which has never done before. In actuality when you have two QBs splitting time like this it’s usually something that hurts the team.
Just for a frame of reference I tried to find a team with two QBs who started at least two games and were both over a 90 QB Rating. Since 1990 that has only happened once. The Philadelphia Eagles, the season that they had Jeff Garcia and Donovan McNabb both manage an above 90 QB Rating.
The question is will Reid use this to his advantage, or find some way in the long run to screw over both Kolb and Vick so that he ruins the team for this season. It is an interesting idea if he goes into games with both Vick and Kolb as his starting QBs. It keeps teams from being able to gameplan against just one of them, and if one of them struggles he can always switch things up. A team ready for Kolb the pocket passer might be exploited by Vick, meanwhile a team ready for Vick to run and forcing him to pass may get lit up by Vick.
It’s not a perfect system or a perfect world. But when you have one of the best QB Duos in easily the last twenty years (as much as I love Billy Volek, he’s a backup) you should use it to your advantage instead of it becoming a weakness. If both QBs can put aside their Egos they can easily make this one of the most exciting teams to watch in the last few years. I just get the feeling in the long run no good will come of this.

So the Jets are just about done. Unless they somehow beat the Dolphins and the Patriots lose the Jets are out of the playoffs. Not only that, but more then likely the QB that they kicked to the curb like trash is the one that will put the final nail in the coffin. That experiment in Green Bay? Well Rodgers has a much higher QB rating then Farve and a hell of a lot less Interceptions. If anything their Defense has been horrible, which has been bringing the Pack down. So very soon we get another great Offseason of Is he coming back or not. I was sick and tired two years ago about Farve staying or going. There is one way to save the Jets now, as Clemens is not the answer. The answer is going to be coming out of jail soon. Thats right, Ron Mexico, AKA Micheal Vick.
I think it is the biggest joke in NFL history that Micheal Vick is behind bars. Lets remember people, there have been NFL players involved in Murder who haven’t spent a day in jail. Also, they claimed that Micheal Vick would be the coverboy for Dog Fighting rings. Yet there isn’t any other stories coming out about major busts in dogfighting. Micheal Vick was nothing more then a poster boy for PETA so they could raise a bunch of new funds. For Micheal Vick to still be in jail is a joke. For him to ever be in jail is a joke. Its horrible that some people care more about animals then they do about human beings.
So hopefully Farve retires and the Jets can go with the Ultimate Wildcat formation. In the shotgun you have Clemens on one side, Vick on the other. So first off you don’t know if you can flat out QB Spy with one of your linebackers. Then if you check off you can always pitch it to Vick and he can flat out run with it or give it a hurl. Hopefully just the motion of the pitch causes some of the DBs to back off or come in. Plus you can snap it to eithger QB and still have a multitude of options. Plus its the best way to slowly get Vick back into the game without him just being a backup and holding a clipboard.
Also, I wanted to say the biggest joke I’ve heard about Vick is that he’s not going to be in shape for the season. Has anyone ever seen a person come out of jail WORSE then when he entered it? Vick is going to be a beast when he gets out of jail. Its not like he’s sitting around and eating doughnuts. He’s more then likely pumping steel and eating almost nothing. Or even worse, those sandwhiches with questionable lunch loaf on them. He is in prison in the south.
The rumors of Cassel to the Jets are some of the worst I’ve ever heard. The Patroits and a lot of other teams have learned about allowing a QB to go to another team in the same divison (cough Pennington cough) and having it bite you in the ass. Secondly lets be serious, Cassel is in a system that would allow Browning Nagle to look like a great QB. Theres got to be a reason he was a backup at USC. You don’t let someone who could be better then Palmer or Lineart play while the superstar is on the bench. Once out of the Patroits system Cassel will come back to earth. Much like AJ Feely, Rob Johnson, or any other number of QBs who were impressive for good teams and then bombed for bad teams. Lets remember Scott Mitchell looked impressive while backing up Dan Marino.
In the end the Jets will keep Mangini around for one more year. They’ll convince Farve to come back for one more year. Then Farve will ruin his legacy with a horrible season, Mangini will be fired, and the Jets will never be willing to take a chance with a Micheal Vick. Which is too bad. Its why the Jets haven’t been to the Super Bowl in forever. They will never take a chance on a guy with an Attitude. Theres a reason Keyshawn Johnson has a Super Bowl Ring and Wayne Chrebet doesn’t. For all the heart, and all the good you can say about Chrebet, it takes a certain level of talent and even being obnoxious to be a super bowl winner. Thats the best that can be said about Nammath, and yet 30 or more years later the Jets refuse to get a player with some swagger, with some attitude and with enough talent to get them far enough. Theres a reason Vinny Testervarde doesn’t have a super bowl ring. Cause he’s no God Dam Nammath!
