Obama can still make me smile

By , August 16, 2011 8:18 pm

I voted for Obama in the last election. Not because I was a brain washed liberal who only watches MSNBC. As I’ve said before, I don’t think MSNBC leans FAR enough to the left, so there’s no reason for me to watch it. If you seriously went out and voted for Jon McCain, you might have been a tad insane. McCain was so out of touch, he didn’t even know how to react to the sinking economy until his poll numbers started sinking. Adding Sarah Palin to the ticket in order to get Democrats who would have voted for Hillary to vote for McCain was insane too. Palin is the exact opposite of Clinton in every way, from the beauty queen aspect to being dim witted and on the opposite of nearly every important issue.

I was always worried though, as Obama seemed to become something to everyone. He was always seemed bigger then he actually was. When you go back it seemed like no one took the time to read his positions on his website, which always seemed a bit more middle of the road then people were making it out to be. I am a little disappointed that Obama hasn’t gotten more done, but he has had to face a Republican party which is completely unwilling to negotiate at all. They seem to be after power for powers sake, and holding Obama back from doing anything while blaming him for everything seems to be their road to the white house.

But the other day during a campaign stop in Iowa, Obama got in an argument with a Tea Party member. Of course the Tea Party member felt he was being ignored and bounced up and down shouting at Obama the following:

Rhodes shouted out that the president’s calls for more civility in politics had little chance of coming to pass after “your vice president is calling people like me, a Tea Party member, a ‘terrorist.’”

Yes, the guy complaining about civility didn’t wait to be picked out of the crowd among people asking questions, in case you were curious. Obama showed some of the wit which makes him so great on the campaign trail.

“In fairness, since I have been called a socialist who wasn’t born in this country, who is destroying America and taking away its freedoms because I passed a health care bill, I am all for lowering the rhetoric.”

The amazing thing is that Bush would have never (okay, I say never, but feel free to point out if I’m wrong) brought up anything that was said about him. From his AWOL National Guard stint, to the Cocaine addiction and the other rhetoric he might have heard on the trail, he never self-referenced it. It makes you wonder how close to home some of those hit. In comparison Obama is willing to bring it up because he knows people claim it, yet realizes that some people are just insane. I hope he calls out a lot more of these Tea Party Douchebags while out and about.

Twitter Hastags are fun

By , March 9, 2011 4:58 am

I’ve come to embrace and love Twitter, especially hash tags. I wasn’t using them for the longest time since I didn’t see the point. But now that I get it (and get more hits when I tag my twitter posts) it’s great. Of course it leaves me open for attacks from random people who don’t like when I bash their sports team (cough Pittsburgh cough) or don’t enjoy my politics. The thing I don’t get is I don’t go looking up stuff I don’t care about. Apparently though some people will look up hashes of things they hate just so they can argue with people, and of course I fall into the trap:

And to make things a little less confusing (ignore my message to LighthouseHockey) here’s my replies.

I probably did that in the laziest and most confusing way possible, but oh well.

To make matters even more fun, this guy joined in retweeting something.

Now that looks like someone who should be trusted with a gun… I’m surprised he has a working computer. It’s amazing how all these conservatives aren’t Republicans, they are Libertarians. Yet they all spout the same BS from Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. Most of them don’t even have an understanding of what a Libertarian is. Ironically he makes my point in using the #tcot hashtag in his profile. It’s for Top Conservatives on Twitter. Visiting the website for it, of course the list includes such libertarian greats as Karl Rove, Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin, etc…

Remember, arguing on the internet means no one wins!

An Open Letter to the Tea Party

To Whom It May Concern

Could you please read a History Textbook? I understand that it’s easy to look at Hitler as a National Socialist and Lenin as a Marxist Socialist in order to scare people when you say Obama is a Socialist. Hitler was actually against the name National Socialist and wanted to name the party the “Social Revolutionary Party”.  To quote from the Nazi Party entry from Wikipedia (yes, I hate using it but it’s easy).

Unlike Drexler and other party members, Hitler was less interested in the “socialist” aspect of “national socialism” beyond moving Social Welfare administration from the Church to the State.

While Hitler would preach a revolution from below to the working class, he would quietly assure his rich backers that no such revolution was coming. Meanwhile, Ernst Rohm, leader of the Brownshirts (or SA) had the utmost belief in not only a revolution from below but that his SA would replace the professional army. As Rohm stirred up trouble after Hitler was named Chancellor he was eventually eliminated during the Knight of the Long Knives.

Although today the German Concentration Camps are remembered for the deaths of millions of Jews. But it might surprise people to learn that the first such Nazi Concentration Camp was setup for Communists and Social Democrats who might resist the Nazi regime. From the press release on the opening of Dachau the first such camp

On Wednesday the first concentration camp is to be opened in Dachau with an accommodation for 5000 persons. ‘All Communists and—where necessary—Reichsbanner and Social Democratic functionaries who endanger state security are to be concentrated here, as in the long run it is not possible to keep individual functionaries in the state prisons without overburdening these prisons, and on the other hand these people cannot be released because attempts have shown that they persist in their efforts to agitate and organise as soon as they are released

So while you may look to vilify Obama, the comparisons of Obama to both Hitler and Lenin (or Stalin) make you look rather silly and clueless to the reality of history. While Hitler’s party might share the word Socialist in it’s name with other Socialist movements it is quite obvious that Hitler never had any intentions to fulfill his “socialist” promises.

Although Lenin may have set up the machinery which Stalin eventually turned the Soviet Union into a dictatorship and a cult of personality of himself, Lenin clearly planned for a much more democratic future. It can not be forgotten that the Reds not only had to deal with a Civil War sponsored by the capitalist nations but invasions from the French, British, United States and Japanese. To blame the Soviets for the starvation and failure of democracy in the nation after facing such odds is to ignore history.

But this is not a rant about the Russian Civil War and Foreign Intervention. But the intentions of the Bolsheviks should be clear from the Russian Constitution of 1918. Firstly, it gave women the right to vote a full two years before the 19th Amendment would be passed in the United States. The Soviet’s at least had good intentions, but the Civil War and the failure to realize the threat that Stalin was lead to it’s failure.

So please, in the future when your screaming about Obama being a “Nazi Communist” understand that quite simply the two words you are putting together (Since you tend to be baby boomers who lived through the Cold War and thus picture “The Enemy” as Communists or Fascists) do not go together at all. I as an Obama supporter (no, I’m not out there campaigning for him, but I at least like him better then the last President) could easily poke a bunch of holes in his campaign platform and his promises without bringing up Nazis, Communists, Fascists or anything of their ilk. Please read a history book or at least read some of Wikipedia so you know what you are talking about.

Best Wishes,
Mark
