14 minutes for megan's comment to show up and to receive thank you email - as expected by tomasz
on
2 forms (through both paypal and cc): losing - comments, all
being recorded as anonymous, all donors opting out
Pre-test Meeting:
2 hour test on Monday 12-2pm - Put blog post about testing to avoid preemtively starting the fundraiser.
Talk to Communications about testing incase of press
TEST TAKE 2 Friday 10/8/10
- 11:07 - banners not leading to landing page.
- cut to 30% - will take 10 minutes to go into effect
- On Wikimediafoundation.org/CTS -> why are some of the landing pages showing up blank? blank = 2010_testing44
- 11:30am
- (Can't contact the database server: Can't connect to local MySQL
server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (11) (localhost))
- so banners have to be up for tech to be able to work on problem
- [11:31am] meganrhernandez: doesn't show up on test
- bad user experience - error + payment server error
- note to make "live comment now" clickable on TY page -- MH+AZ
- talk to arthur about 15 minute delay
- it
wouldn't matter if we displayed JUST comments, but where comments are
displayed now is our donation history page. we can't really show a
donation on there until it has actually been accepted -- arthur
- 11:45 am impressions - testing 44 ~ 1.3 million impressions
- testing 44 2-step: 280,000
- finc -
- click rate much higher than 5% - much higher than expected
- should be 83/second
- so we were getting at least 600 per second
- so either erik zachte stats are wrong or our #
- we need to know click through rate to scale appropriately -
BarkingFish: not getting any banners in IE8, Firefox is running fine.
- 12:20 15/15 30% total of A (control) & B (one step)
- (Jimmy image in header - 1-step vs. 2-step) Banner A, Banner B-10
- Payment type hits = load of page (not just clicks)
** Jimmy too popular for our own good**
** let's monitor twitter during tests**
I cleared my cache and went back to en.wikipedia.org and the banner came back.
I think it's that once you click on it, it doesn't come back till you return to the site
It would help if instead of the office trying to do the testing and hosting the tests, you had someone
on mic to host the tests and comments separately
Don't
pick #s off donation contribution form, mine the #s out of database so
we can be sure to only get the #s for the duration of the 2-hour test
Weren't you saying earlier that some of the numbers were gonna be invalid or something?
Never mind - i remembered that was before you switched to the a vs. b thing
2 step beat 1 step process but not reliable test - want to include another one step variation
c vs. D = long letter better
payment server time- need until thurs.
Monday: Jimmy banner testing en.WP - different kinds of Jimmy banners
What we've learned:
- ***long letter (c) > short letter (d)***
- no jimmy masthead (b) > jimmy masthead (c)
- vertica(d)l = horizontal (f)
- big paypal button (e) > paypal link (f): Big paypal button increased both paypal & credit card donations
Oct 11, 2010: Jimmy Banner test
Banners: http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:CentralNotice&method=listNoticeDetail¬ice=Fundraiser-enWiki
Add to check list:
- Links on Google doc clickable
- Donate before test goes live
Issues:
- PB unable to load banners using Safari at first, 40 refreshes, 1 banner. - No problem for others
- Photos on banners loading slowy on Opera - pictures should not be cached if that are exactly the same.
- Add totals for daily contribution tracking stats: total # of hits, donations, amount.
- CC gateway - Selects currency and clicks to go to next page, the amount is still there, but the currency reverts to USD
General To Do:
- What we've learned should list all the open issues
- We must remove unsupported currencies from paypal
Servers:
Twitter:
20 mentions of fundraising test on Twitter.
50-60 clickthroughts from Twitter at 1:20 mark.
Banners:
Banner 51 has pulled above banner 50 in Paypal contributions
with 305 contributions, we have beat 10,000 an hour! Go team! - running at 60% on only en.Wikipedia, to only annon users.
Do we get more contributions from the sidebar during banner testing?
What was our highest hour last year? -
Trends:
second
hour has slowed down, we were at $20,000 at end of first hour, now we
have only additional $4,000 ($24,000 total) 30 minutes into second hour -
New appeal rush/banner fatigue
Final 2 hour total:
avg. 33.01
final: 855 contributions
$33,614.82
$35K day
10/12/10 Banner testing: Beat Jimmy
Banners: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising_2010/Banner_testing/Stats/Banner_history
New Goal: $50,000/hour
French= running at 50% with 5 banners at 10%each
German=running at 50% with 5 banners at 10% each
English=running 41 banners with 60% total at 1.5% each
To Do:
- We
need a template to automatically update wiki stats instead of manually
entering same data on each page (referring to how many people are
employed at WMF)
- Track what currency came in for each banner and divide: Need to spread out landing page stats.
- Need to define systems for future tests
- **REMEMBER: update facts on landing pages - # employees, goal etc. (see comment above and http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Category:Wikimedia_Foundation_statistics_template
- Add: Weights banners ran at on banner history page.
- Where
are clickthroughs from the Jimmy banners we're not running coming from?
Banner 44 clicks -- posssibly because 44 was scheduled to run
until we switched it out with 50 -- needs at least 10 minutes to update-
could have been runnning for a few mintues at the beginnning of the
campaign .
- We need to make sure to have interface language & text language the same
- **how separate jimmy banner per language
- **tracking & test correctly different languages
- **ADD TO CHECKLIST (Create new checklist) - once we're down - check and make sure banners are off**
- - Get tomasz to confirm that the queue is clear.
French Banner Notes:
- 5 did not run (labeled as 5 - ran under 3). Testing 5 & Testing 3 results cannot be trusted.
- 1 was also not running correctly, it was running as fr21
- 56 is testing as 1
Issues:
CC Form through Payflow Pro Gateway shows euro correctly, but country is defaulting to USA. Maybe this is what
the user was referring to? (this is in ref to a clickthrough from the de banners)
Final numbers:
269 Contributions
$8,913.61
Average: $21.83
Jimmy: 3.68% click-through, higher than yesterday
Donor Quote: 2nd highest income - Brain massage, which was also larger
The Jimmy banner was the largest, how much of an impact does this have on the results?
We want to run more donor quotes
Jimmy appeal in german: 5%
Germans:
DE testing 4 had more clicks per hour excluding Jimmy banner
(with your help Wikipedia is free and independent)
We have also learned:
Compared to 9/23 tests: 0.48 was rate for Be Curious,
which out performed us today, in terms of clicks, however produced little in donations.
Spreadsheet:
Shaded stats on fundraising doc refer to low click through rates
Highest Click through rate:
1. Jimmy: 3.68%
2. Brain Massage: .25%
3. "Admit it: without Wikipedia, you never could have finished that paper. 0.24%
4. "You depend on $sitename for information Now it depends on you." 0.21%
5. WP: Made possible button .15%
6. How much would you give to keep knowledge free: button: .14%
What We learned:
- Jimmy Won
- Donor quote did well, we'd like to experiment further with the format of donor quotes and test more in the future.
- Next time we test donor quotes: w/wo button, w/wo donor name
- Not enough donations on anything to come to conclusions
- We should play with the layout of banners, size, color, animation, images.
Next Test:
Thursday: only testing same Jimmy banner from today with multiple landing pages. in en
Thursday 10/14
We are testing:
- Jimmy letter, multiple landing pages with different ask strings, before it was $250, 100, 75, 35
- Today, we are testing ask strings of $100, 50, 35, 20 versus those listed above
- Comment section, as well
- We are running at 60%
Civi:
Civi info for Philippe is correct
Philippe received his thank you within 1.5 minutes
Queue stats:
>10 mins 24 donations
3:17 pm 182 donations
3:23 pm 252 donations
3:26 102 waiting so we are changing the pull rate to 50 every 5 minutes
3:30 pm 312 donations
3:55 pm 438 donations in line
At just about an hour we have $11,355
3 million banner impressions at just over an hour
4:40 pm 788 contibutions with a total of $21,907
4:40 pm 785donations still in queue
5:00 pm 754 still in queue
To do:
- Talk to Alex about thank you page (Mono recommends a sharing option)
- Meditate
on how to handle "tax deductible" only for US donations, geo? think
about England? Tomasz will talk to Ryan about this...
- We need to check why in one test cc were 1.5 times more than pp, but in this test it seems to be the reverse
- Add what time we're running the banners to the spreadsheet
Issues:
- Megan's IP address was declined by fraud, Megan triggered "velocity"
- No stat for how many people click the close button (hide banner button)
- 36 impressions on French
- 23 impressions on German
- Barking Fish is having a problem with IE8, it is a repetative problem
- Keegan confirmed: no banners on IE8
- I will be attempting to reinstall IE8 and will report back on this asap.
- When
you click the logo on the CC donate, it goes to a page that *looks*
like an error <- it is an error, users shouldn't be sent there, it's
not for users -> to some users. (It's the login form.)
- JPY requested donation amount 35 yen = $0.42
Social Media:
- picked us up within 10 minutes of running
- Picked up more heavily on Twitter than our previous tests. 30+ tweets
- Ex: 0mkarr: Every year this wikipedia guy comes and ask for donation.
- DerekFlanzraich: Wikipedia/Jimmy Wales asks for donations again:http://bit.ly/b4O0II Laugh, maybe, but last year it raised >$4 MILLION http://bit.ly/9NBQcW
- spencerchen: Use Wikipedia everyday? Good, then donate some money to keep them going: http://bit.ly/9go1uQ #justdoit!
- netsharc: wow, Wikipedia banners getting bigger and annoying...
- kestertaylor: I would be much, much more likely to donate to Wikipedia if Jimmy Wales didn't keep popping up like a giant douche.
Mono believes this is exactly why we cannot leave Jimbo up for 2 MONTHS
Why? Would he raise too much money? :) -Rock drum
Rock drum, read the above comment from the twitter feed by kestertaylor
and you'd find out what mono was referring to :) << Thor
Post-test
ask-string - test new amounts?
-no comment - higher click donate button, but less completion rate
Tuesday Oct. 19, 2010

Backlog
should decrease - before we were running 50 donations/5 minutes, now
150/1min. Our goal is to make Tomasz have to increase this
more.
